Yep, you read that right! Tonight it’s all about making my favorite garish, bourbon soaked cherries!
I came across a recipe from Gimme Some Oven and made a couple minor tweaks based on my spice and sweetness preferences. All you need to crank these out is a handful of ingredients and about 15 minutes.
Have 5 minutes? I’ll show ya how to do it here!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of bourbon
- 1 pound sweet/pitted cherries (fresh or frozen)
- 1/2 cup honey (up to 1 cup)
- 1/2 water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- Orange peel
- Pinch of nutmeg (option)
What to do:
- Put the cherries in a large mason jar or a few small (pint) jars – set aside.
- In a saucepan, over medium heat – add the honey, water, cinnamon, orange peel. Stir together and dissolve the honey, then simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat, take out orange peel and cinnamon stick and add bourbon. Stir to combine.
- Pour the bourbon mixture over the cherries – allow liquid to cool completely before putting the lids on.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 24 hours before enjoying. They’ll last up to 1 month before they get super drunk and mushy. 🙂
Fresh vs. Frozen Cherries
I love to make bourbon soaked cherries year round, so one of my favorite ways to make that happen is with frozen cherries. It’s hard to beat fresh cherries, and this summer I may endure the mess and put a few pounds in the freezer myself. But let’s face it, pitting cherries is a bloody mess.
Get Creative!
Play around with different bourbons and whiskeys, or add a little something special to them like Amaretto or Campari to change up the flavor profile to enhance your cocktails. Then make yourself a lovely garlic parm chicken dinner, strong drink and enjoy!
Hope you love them as much as we do!
