If you’re like me and cactus are about the only plants you can keep alive, then this is the post for you! Building a DIY succulent planter box is quick, easy and generally speaking, succulents are pretty resilient plants. A DIY project also makes for great “me time”, so you can just have a few minutes of self-care.
I have my sister to thank for this project. She knows I am challenged in the plant department. I really wish I had the same green thumb that she and my mom, and apparently my daughter all have. My sis gave me these succulents and awesome cigar box, then set me off to plant them, by myself!
Plants for Beginners!
I find succulents to be simple, beautiful and peaceful plants. They are also perfect for beginners (and a bit more kid-friendly than a cactus). Here are the steps for planting them and just swing by your local antique shop, cigar shop or even pick up a fun mix of boxes here! Preferably you’ll want a wooden box.
The DIY Steps…
Once you pick a box, head over to your local hardware store or nursery and find a couple plants, probably 2-3 will work depending the size of the box. There are so many beautiful options out there!
Clean out your box with a damp paper towel.
Next Up
You need to seal off the box so that water doesn’t leak out onto your counter or start eroding the wood box. Look for a plastic tray when you get your succulents. But for this little DIY succulent planter box, I just used Press & Seal that I had on hand. Just measure out enough for the bottom and sides of the box.
Time to Plant!
Gather a few rocks from your yard and place them in the bottom of the box.
Now, fill the box with potting soil, about half way depending on the depth of your box.
Time to Get Dirty!
Carefully remove your plants from their containers and place them in the box. As you’ll see, I broke off a few pieces of one, but they’ll grow back (I hope!). Use a cup and just fill in around them with soil.
Clean up the box, water the succulents and there you have it! A cute, quick and easy DIY succulent planter box of your very own! I hope yours is a success too!
